Shelley Looney has just announced she is going back to college. After five years leading Bison Hockey, Shelley has accepted a new position that takes her to Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri. It is with bittersweet emotions we salute Shelley and thank her for all her efforts on our behalf. We are thrilled for her new adventure but we are sad to see her leave.

Shelley is returning to the college hockey ranks as the head coach of the D1 Lindenwood Women’s Hockey team. The Lions compete in the CHA league along with such teams as Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Penn State, Syracuse, and RIT. It is a wonderful opportunity for Shelley and Lindenwood is excited to expand their program around Shelley’s national reputation.

In June 2014, Shelley moved to Buffalo to become the Director of Hockey for the Bison program after serving in a similar role for the New Jersey Colonials girls program from 2006-2013. Shelley immediately impacted our program in a number of positive ways. She organized our skills development program. She designed USA Hockey practice curriculums for each age level and helped our coaches teach those techniques.

Shelley’s Olympic experiences combined with her years in the USA national women’s hockey program brought credibility to the Bison program. Shelley’s impact went well beyond Bison Hockey.

Shelley became the inaugural co-head coach of the Buffalo Beauts and later head coach of the Girls Varsity Hockey team at Nichols School. Shelley taught at the Academy of Hockey for the Harbor Center. In the last five seasons her impact has been felt across NY State. She has been an ambassador for girls & women’s hockey.

For many years Shelley has served on the national board of USA Hockey. She has coached US women’s teams in international play frequently. This winter Shelley coached the US Women’s team at the Winter World University games in Siberia.

Twenty one years ago in 1998 the US Women’s Hockey team won Olympic Gold for the first time in Nagano, Japan. Shelley Looney scored that winning goal. It has been our good fortune to be able to claim Shelley as one of our own these last five years. We are grateful for her thoughtful stewardship as she guided our program. Congratulations Shelley and thank you for your leadership.

Sincerely,
Barney Walsh
President Bison Hockey

A Note From Shelley

I would like to thank the Buffalo Bisons organization for their support over the last five years. I have truly enjoyed my time here in Buffalo- I really can’t say it enough. While I am very excited to start this next chapter in my life, it comes with a bit of sadness to be leaving such a great city, the Bisons organization and my friends.

My departure comes with the Bisons organization on a very high note. I am comfortable that the organization is perfectly positioned to continue it's growth and success. The administration, leadership and coaches will carry the momentum we have established for years to come.

Thank you,
Shelley
