How much does it cost to play for Buffalo Bison Hockey?
Good question.
We know this is an important issue.
We have a published Program Fee Sheet in the "Important Stuff" section (upper left corner of the home page) under "Fees." The fees are set to cover costs. The organization tries to break even; however, not every family can afford to pay the full fee amount. If you need financial aid please fill out the financial aid form (also found in the "Fees" section) or call Cynthia Dwyer at 465-5522 for assistance.
How young do kids start?
Our youngest skaters are 3 or 4 years old. Entry-level skaters go into the Chucksters program. As they progress they move up into the Rising Stars. For more information go to the Initiation Program Section of our website.
What leagues do your teams play in?
Our Girls teams currently compete in two leagues. Many of our travel teams play in the South Western Ontario Girls Hockey League (SWGHL). We also have girls teams play in the Great Lakes Girls Hockey League (GLGHL). Each season we determine where we can find the appropriate level of competition for our various teams.
Our Boys teams play in the Western New York Amateur Hockey League (WNYAHL). The majority of our travel teams compete in this league, however we have some teams that play house-level hockey against local teams in the Greater Buffalo area.
For more information go to our Great Links Section to visit the league websites mentioned above.

What sort of old-timers program do you have?
The "OLD BOYS" is the home for cagey veterans who want to play once a week. North Buffalo Bison Hockey has a very active program for non-checking seniors. Our group ranges from 23 to 60 years of age. We have lots of scoring, very little passing, even less back checking and rarely do we operate at full speed.
We skate every Wednesday evening, except on or next to major holidays, from 9:45 to 11:15 pm on the Large Rink at Nichols School for roughly 25 weeks from the beginning of September through the third week of March.
The "Old Boys" program is not available at this time.
How long ago did Buffalo Bison Hockey begin?
The Buffalo Bison Hockey Association has history dating back to 1959 when it was the Shamrocks Athletic Club (A.C.) See the History section of our website for more background information.
Who owns the travel jerseys?
Buffalo Bison Hockey owns the game jerseys our travel teams wear. We made a decision awhile back to keep an complete inventory of jerseys and recycle them as long as they hold up. We budget our jerseys to last three years, so we are replacing a third of our inventory every season. This approach relieves a family from having to purchase two sets of uniforms every season.
In light of the recent merger, Buffalo Bison Hockey will be "refreshing" our jersey inventory with a series of patches that will be placed on the left shoulder. Each jersey will have a different patch with a logo designed for the new organization.
Each season Buffalo Bison Hockey does give our Initiation Program players new practice style jerseys and socks to keep. That decision seems to be well received, particularly by the players. The jersey colors and logos rotate by team level.
Why do we have so much ice time in Sept & Oct ?
The Buffalo Bisons have a lot of available ice in the first two months of the season because Nichols School doesn't start skating until the first week in November. With the new addition of Midget teams, we also try to accommodate them as much as possible before their High School season starts. As a consequence the Buffalo Bisons take advantage of these first two months and try to offer as much skating skill development as possible, as well as game ice for our older teams.
Once Nichols begins its winter sports program our access to the rink drops off. In terms of total ice availability the Buffalo Bison Hockey program is the major user of ice at the Dann Memorial Rink at Nichols and the North Buffalo Rink. We have been fortunate to have the terrific relationship we currently enjoy with Nichols. For 45 consecutive years Nichols has put a roof over our heads. It's been a great partnership. We have occupied the North Buffalo Rink for 15 years and will continue to utilize its ice in the future.
Where do we find driving directions to another rink?
There is a section in this website that provides Arena Directions. The two major leagues we play in, WNYAHL (Boys) and SWGHL (Girls), both offer arena directions for their member teams within their league sites. If you cannot find a particular arena then go to www.arenamaps.com which has directions to arenas all over North America.
